Embracing Adversity as Your Greatest Teacher

Person approaching winding blue path upward.

What if everything you thought about adversity was wrong? What if the obstacles in your path weren’t roadblocks, but stepping stones? Let’s flip the script on struggle and discover why adversity might be the best teacher you’ll ever have.

What is Adversity, Really?

The dictionary defines adversity as ‘a state of serious or continued difficulty or misfortune.’ But is that really what it is? I’d argue that adversity is actually the great teacher. Think about it—every accomplishment in your life has come from overcoming some type of challenge. We learn skills specifically to overcome our present situations and reach our goals.

The Learning Curve of Life

As babies, we learn to crawl to access the things we desire—toys, food, our parents. Then we learn to walk to get there faster, and eventually to run. This pattern repeats in every aspect of life. To communicate, we learn to speak, then read, then write. To eat, we learn to chew and swallow, then eventually to cook and prepare our own meals. What if we looked at all adversity this way—not as an obstacle, but as an opportunity to improve ourselves and grow new skills?

The Excuse Trap

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: we often hold onto adversity as our downfall because it gives us an excuse to fail without trying. It’s socially acceptable to use any struggle as a reason for not reaching our potential. What makes it worse is that the world coddles this mindset and encourages a lack of ambition.

Small Wins, Big Transformation

There’s always a way to grow from adversity. The smallest movement is growth. We don’t just start running—we first crawl, then walk, and eventually run. That’s how we overcome anything we face. It’s the compounding of small wins that builds the courage and discipline to achieve the big wins. I once heard someone say, ‘1 day of change is unnoticeable, but 100 days of change and you are unrecognizable.’ I believe that’s true.
